Policies of expansion and the last annexations (1765–1856)
Warren Hastings's ring-fence, Wellesley's subsidiary alliance, Lord Hastings and paramountcy with the Anglo-Nepal War (Sagauli 1816), the Anglo-Burmese wars and the First Anglo-Afghan War, the annexation of Sindh (1843), Ranjit Singh and the two Anglo-Sikh wars (Punjab 1849), Dalhousie's doctrine of lapse, and the takeover of Berar (1853) and Awadh (1856) on the eve of the Revolt of 1857.
Exam traps
- Two Hastings: Warren Hastings (1772–85) is linked with the ring-fence; Lord Hastings (1813–23) with paramountcy, the Pindari campaign and the Anglo-Nepal War. Do not swap them.
- Hyderabad (1798) was the first state to accept Wellesley's subsidiary alliance, before Mysore (1799), Awadh (1801) and the Peshwa (1802).
- Awadh was annexed in 1856 on the ground of misgovernment, not under the doctrine of lapse: its rulers had heirs.
- The Udaipur annexed by lapse in 1852 was a small state in central India, not the Rajput state of Udaipur (Mewar).
- There are two Treaties of Amritsar: 1809 (Ranjit Singh accepts the Sutlej as his limit) and 1846 (Kashmir passed to Gulab Singh after the First Anglo-Sikh War).
- Chillianwala (January 1849) was costly and indecisive; Gujrat (February 1849), in Punjab, was the decisive battle of the Second Anglo-Sikh War. Sobraon (1846) belongs to the First War.
- Sindh was annexed in 1843 under Ellenborough after the Battle of Miani, before Dalhousie's time; Punjab was annexed in 1849 under Dalhousie.
- The Treaty of Sagauli (1816) ended the Anglo-Nepal War; Nepal remained independent and was never annexed.
Recap
- Ring-fence (Warren Hastings): guard the frontiers of neighbours, chiefly Awadh, so that enemies meet a buffer before Company territory.
- Subsidiary alliance (Wellesley, 1798–1805): Company force paid by subsidy or ceded land, British Resident, no other Europeans, no war or treaty without consent; Hyderabad first (1798), then Mysore and Tanjore (1799), Awadh (1801), the Peshwa (1802).
- Lord Hastings (1813–23): paramountcy and subordinate isolation; Pindari campaign; Rajput states under protection (1818); Anglo-Nepal War and the Treaty of Sagauli (1816).
- Burma: Treaty of Yandabo (1826) after the First War; Lower Burma 1852; Upper Burma 1885. First Anglo-Afghan War (1839–42) under Auckland: Shah Shuja installed, retreat from Kabul in January 1842.
- Sindh: treaties of 1809 and 1832; pressure from 1839; Napier wins at Miani (February 1843); annexed 1843 under Ellenborough.
- Punjab: Ranjit Singh and the Treaty of Amritsar (1809); First Anglo-Sikh War 1845–46 (Mudki, Ferozeshah, Aliwal, Sobraon; Treaties of Lahore and Amritsar 1846); Second War 1848–49 (Chillianwala, Gujrat); annexed March 1849.
- Doctrine of lapse (Dalhousie): Satara 1848, Jaitpur and Sambalpur 1849, Baghat 1850, Udaipur 1852, Jhansi 1853, Nagpur 1854; Carnatic and Tanjore titles ended; Nana Sahib's pension refused.
- Berar handed over (1853); Awadh annexed for misgovernment (February 1856), Wajid Ali Shah sent to Calcutta; the grievances fed the Revolt of 1857.
Practice questions
Q1. Satara, Jhansi and Nagpur were annexed under the doctrine of lapse by which Governor-General?
- Lord Wellesley
- Lord Hastings
- Lord Dalhousie
- Lord William Bentinck
Show answer
Answer: C. Lord Dalhousie
(c) is correct: Dalhousie (1848–56) annexed Satara (1848), Jhansi (1853) and Nagpur (1854) by lapse. (a) Wellesley is linked with the subsidiary alliance; (b) Lord Hastings with paramountcy; (d) Bentinck annexed Coorg (1834) for misgovernment, not by lapse.
Q2. Consider the following statements about Wellesley's subsidiary alliance:
1. Hyderabad was the first state to accept it, in 1798.
2. A state that accepted it had to keep a British Resident at its court and could not employ other Europeans.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer
Answer: C. Both 1 and 2
Both statements are correct: the Nizam signed in 1798, ahead of Mysore (1799), Awadh (1801) and the Peshwa (1802), and the treaties required a Resident and excluded other Europeans, chiefly the French. So (a), (b) and (d) are wrong.
Q3. Match List I (treaty) with List II (context):
List I: A. Treaty of Sagauli B. Treaty of Yandabo C. Treaty of Lahore (1846) D. Treaty of Amritsar (1809)
List II: 1. First Anglo-Sikh War 2. Anglo-Nepal War 3. Ranjit Singh accepts the Sutlej as his limit 4. First Anglo-Burmese War
Select the correct answer using the code given below:
- A-2, B-4, C-1, D-3
- A-4, B-2, C-1, D-3
- A-2, B-4, C-3, D-1
- A-4, B-2, C-3, D-1
Show answer
Answer: A. A-2, B-4, C-1, D-3
(a) is correct: Sagauli (1816) ended the Anglo-Nepal War, Yandabo (1826) the First Anglo-Burmese War, Lahore (1846) the First Anglo-Sikh War, and Amritsar (1809) fixed the Sutlej as Ranjit Singh's limit. (b) and (d) swap Sagauli and Yandabo; (c) and (d) swap the two Punjab treaties.
Q4. Consider the following statements about the annexation of Awadh:
1. Awadh was annexed in 1856 under the doctrine of lapse because its Nawab had no heir.
2. Dalhousie justified the annexation on the ground of misgovernment.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer
Answer: B. 2 only
Only statement 2 is correct. Statement 1 is wrong: Awadh's rulers had heirs, so lapse could not apply; Dalhousie used the charge of misgovernment and deposed Wajid Ali Shah. So (a), (c) and (d) are wrong.
Q5. Arrange the following events in chronological order:
1. Annexation of Sindh
2. Treaty of Sagauli
3. Annexation of Punjab
4. Annexation of Awadh
Select the correct answer using the code given below:
- 2-1-3-4
- 1-2-3-4
- 2-3-1-4
- 1-2-4-3
Show answer
Answer: A. 2-1-3-4
(a) is correct: Sagauli 1816, Sindh 1843, Punjab 1849, Awadh 1856. (b) puts Sindh before Sagauli; (c) puts Punjab before Sindh; (d) puts Awadh before Punjab.
Q6. With reference to the ring-fence policy, consider the following statements:
1. It is associated with Warren Hastings.
2. Its main aim was to annex the states on the Company's borders.
3. Awadh was the most important buffer state under it.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
- 1 and 2 only
- 1 and 3 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
Show answer
Answer: B. 1 and 3 only
(b) is correct. Statements 1 and 3 are right. Statement 2 is wrong: the policy was defensive, guarding neighbours' frontiers so that they shielded Company territory, not annexing them. So (a), (c) and (d), which include statement 2, are wrong.
Q7. Which one of the following was NOT annexed by applying the doctrine of lapse?
- Satara
- Jhansi
- Sambalpur
- Punjab
Show answer
Answer: D. Punjab
(d) is correct: Punjab was annexed in 1849 by conquest after the Second Anglo-Sikh War. (a) Satara (1848), (b) Jhansi (1853) and (c) Sambalpur (1849) were all annexed by lapse, so they are wrong answers here.
Q8. Consider the following statements about the First Anglo-Afghan War:
1. It was fought under Lord Auckland, and a British army placed Shah Shuja on the throne at Kabul in 1839.
2. It ended with Afghanistan being annexed to the Company's territory.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
