Causes and the outbreak
The political causes of the Revolt of 1857 (the doctrine of lapse, the annexation of Awadh, the Mughal title), the economic causes (revenue, the Inam Commission, the taluqdars of Awadh, ruined artisans), the socio-religious causes (the reform laws of 1829–1856, missionaries), the military causes (pay, promotion, batta, the General Service Enlistment Act 1856), the greased cartridges, Mangal Pandey at Barrackpore, and the outbreak at Meerut and Delhi in May 1857.
