Centres, leaders, suppression and results
The main centres of the Revolt of 1857 and their leaders (Delhi, Kanpur, Lucknow, Jhansi, Bihar, Bareilly), the British commanders and the suppression, the regions and rulers that stayed loyal, why the revolt failed, how historians have described it, the Government of India Act 1858, Queen Victoria's Proclamation and the reorganisation of the army.
Lucknow: Begum Hazrat Mahal; Jagdishpur: Kunwar Singh; Bareilly: Khan Bahadur Khan; Kanpur: Nana Saheb. Option (b) wrongly gives Jagdishpur to Khan Bahadur Khan and Bareilly to Kunwar Singh; (c) swaps Lucknow and Kanpur; (d) gets every pair wrong.
Q2. Consider the following statements about the Government of India Act, 1858:
1. It created the office of Secretary of State for India, a member of the British cabinet.
2. It abolished the Court of Directors and the Board of Control.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer
Answer: C. Both 1 and 2
Both are correct: the Act placed a Secretary of State for India, a cabinet minister answerable to Parliament, at the head of Indian affairs and abolished the two bodies of the old double system. Hence (a), (b) and (d) are wrong.
Q3. Who was given command of the rebel forces at Delhi in July 1857?
- Tantia Tope
- Bakht Khan
- Azimullah Khan
- Kunwar Singh
Show answer
Answer: B. Bakht Khan
Bakht Khan, an artillery officer who came from Bareilly, was given command at Delhi. Tantia Tope was Nana Saheb's commander at Kanpur and later in central India; Azimullah Khan was Nana Saheb's adviser; Kunwar Singh led in Bihar.
Q4. Queen Victoria's Proclamation of 1 November 1858 was read out by Lord Canning at a durbar held at
- Delhi
- Calcutta

- No further extension of British territory in India
- Respect for the rights, dignity and honour of the Indian princes
- Non-interference in the religious beliefs of Indians
- An elected Indian majority in the Governor-General's council
Show answer
Answer: D. An elected Indian majority in the Governor-General's council
The Proclamation promised no further annexation, respect for the princes and non-interference in religion, so (a), (b) and (c) were all promises. It said nothing about an elected Indian majority in any council, so (d) is the answer.
Q8. Consider the following statements:
1. V. D. Savarkar described the events of 1857 as a war of independence in a book published in 1909.
2. The Nizam of Hyderabad joined the revolt and led the rising in the Deccan.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer
Answer: A. 1 only
Only 1 is correct. The Nizam, guided by his minister Salar Jung, stayed loyal and kept the Deccan quiet, so statement 2 is wrong; hence (b), (c) and (d) are wrong.
