Quick recap: Economic impact of British rule on one page
Both parts of the chapter condensed for quick revision: the Permanent Settlement, Ryotwari and Mahalwari, commercialisation and rural debt; the drain of wealth, deindustrialisation, railways and the guarantee system, the first modern industries and famine policy.
Exam traps
- The Permanent Settlement (1793) is Cornwallis's; Warren Hastings tried revenue farming (1772) and yearly settlements (1777).
- Ryotwari settled with the individual cultivator, Mahalwari with the village or estate; only the Permanent Settlement fixed the revenue for ever.
- Regulation VII of 1822 began Mahalwari and Regulation IX of 1833 revised it; neither concerns Bengal's Permanent Settlement.
- The Deccan Riots (1875) were against moneylenders; the indigo revolt (1859–60) was against European planters in Bengal.
- Poverty and Un-British Rule in India is Naoroji's; The Economic History of India is R. C. Dutt's.
- The Charter Act of 1813 ended the Company's Indian trade monopoly (tea and China kept); the Charter Act of 1833 ended its trade altogether.
- The first train ran Bombay–Thane on 16 April 1853; the first Famine Commission (1880) was chaired by Richard Strachey.
