Quick recap: British expansion in India on one page
All three parts of British expansion condensed for quick revision: the European companies, the Carnatic wars and the conquest of Bengal; the Anglo-Mysore and Anglo-Maratha wars; and the ring-fence, subsidiary alliance, paramountcy, frontier wars, Sindh, Punjab, the doctrine of lapse and Awadh.
Exam traps
- Buxar (1764), not Plassey (1757), settled British power in Bengal and led to the diwani of 1765.
- The diwani was granted by the Mughal emperor Shah Alam II, not by the Nawab of Bengal.

- The Fourth Anglo-Mysore War (1799) ended with the fall of Seringapatam and Tipu's death, not with a treaty signed by Tipu.
- Warren Hastings: ring-fence; Lord Hastings: paramountcy and the Anglo-Nepal War. Hyderabad (1798) was the first subsidiary state.
- Awadh (1856) was annexed for misgovernment, not under the doctrine of lapse.
- Sindh (1843) was annexed under Ellenborough; Punjab (1849) under Dalhousie.
