Quick recap: National Income on one page
Both parts of National Income condensed for quick revision: the aggregates and the prices behind them, what is counted, how India's NSO produces and revises the estimates, base years, sectors, per capita income, PPP, green GDP and the HDI, with a one-table overview and eight mixed questions.
| Aggregate | How it is reached | Remember |
|---|---|---|
| GDP at market prices | GVA at basic prices + product taxes − product subsidies | Headline growth measure since the 2011-12 series |
| GNP (GNI) | GDP + net factor income from abroad | Smaller than GDP when the net figure is negative |
| NDP / NNP | Gross figure − depreciation | 'Net' always means after depreciation |
| National income | NNP at factor cost | Market prices − net indirect taxes = factor cost |
| Real GDP | Output at base-year prices | GDP deflator = nominal ÷ real × 100 |
| Per capita income | Net national income ÷ population | An average; says nothing on distribution |
Exam traps
- National income in the strict sense is NNP at factor cost, not GDP at market prices.
- GNP = GDP + net factor income from abroad; if that net figure is negative, GNP is below GDP.
- Transfer payments, second-hand sales and share purchases are excluded from GDP; imputed rent and own-account farm output are included.
- The GDP deflator excludes imports and has no fixed basket; the CPI includes imported consumer goods.
- First advance estimates come in early January, before the financial year ends.
- The NSO (2019, CSO + NSSO) is under MoSPI; the National Income Committee (1949) was chaired by P.C. Mahalanobis.
- Current base year: 2022-23 (series released 27 February 2026); the previous one was 2011-12.
- Mining is primary in the three-sector scheme but under 'industry' in official tables; the HDI uses GNI per capita (PPP), not GDP.
Recap
- National income is a flow; count final goods or value added to avoid double counting.
- Production, income and expenditure methods measure the same total.
- Domestic to national: add net factor income from abroad; gross to net: subtract depreciation.
- Market prices to factor cost: subtract net indirect taxes; GDP = GVA at basic prices + net product taxes.
- Real GDP at base-year prices; deflator = nominal ÷ real × 100.
- NSO under MoSPI compiles the accounts on a calendar of advance, provisional and revised estimates.
- Base year 2011-12 (series of 2015) replaced by 2022-23 (series of 27 February 2026).
- Beyond GDP: per capita income, PPP comparisons, green accounts and the HDI.
Practice questions
Q1. Which of the following is national income in the strict sense?
- GDP at market prices
- NNP at factor cost
- GNP at market prices
- NDP at factor cost
Show answer
Answer: B. NNP at factor cost
National income is NNP at factor cost. GDP and GNP at market prices still include depreciation and net indirect taxes, and NDP at factor cost is domestic, so it leaves out net factor income from abroad.
Q2. Consider the following statements:
1. When net factor income from abroad is negative, GNP is less than GDP.
2. Net domestic product is obtained by subtracting net indirect taxes from gross domestic product.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer
Answer: A. 1 only
Statement 1 is correct. Statement 2 is wrong: gross becomes net by subtracting depreciation; subtracting net indirect taxes moves from market prices to factor cost. So '2 only' and 'both' are wrong, and 'neither' misses statement 1.
Q3. Which one of the following is included in India's GDP?
- Old-age pensions paid by the government
- Sale of a second-hand car
- Imputed rent of owner-occupied houses
- Purchase of shares in the stock market
Show answer
Answer: C. Imputed rent of owner-occupied houses
Imputed rent of owner-occupied houses is included because housing services are produced. Pensions are transfer payments, a second-hand car was counted when first produced, and buying shares is a purely financial transaction, so none of these three is included.
Q4. Consider the following statements about the GDP deflator:
1. It is calculated as nominal GDP divided by real GDP, multiplied by 100.
2. It includes the prices of imported goods.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- 1 only
- 2 only
- Both 1 and 2
- Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer
Answer: A. 1 only
Statement 1 is the formula. Statement 2 is wrong: the deflator covers only what is produced at home, so imports are excluded. So '2 only' and 'both' are wrong, and 'neither' misses statement 1.
Q5. Consider the following statements:
1. The first advance estimates of GDP for a financial year are released before that year ends.
2. The National Statistical Office is part of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation.
3. The National Income Committee of 1949 was chaired by V.K.R.V. Rao.
Which of the statements given above are correct?
- 1 and 2 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
Show answer
Answer: A. 1 and 2 only
Statements 1 and 2 are correct. Statement 3 is wrong: P.C. Mahalanobis chaired the committee and Rao was a member. Every option containing statement 3 is therefore wrong.
Q6. The current base year of India's national accounts series is:
- 2004-05
- 2011-12
- 2017-18
- 2022-23
Show answer
Answer: D. 2022-23
The new series released on 27 February 2026 has base year 2022-23. 2011-12 was the previous base year, 2004-05 the one before it, and 2017-18 was never adopted as the base year of the national accounts.
Q7. Consider the following pairs:
1. Mining and quarrying : Primary sector in the three-sector scheme
2. Per capita income in India : Net national income divided by population
3. Human Development Index : Published by the World Bank
Which of the pairs given above are correctly matched?
- 1 and 2 only
- 2 and 3 only
- 1 and 3 only
- 1, 2 and 3
Show answer
Answer: A. 1 and 2 only
Pairs 1 and 2 are correct. Pair 3 is wrong: the HDI is published by the UNDP in its Human Development Report; the World Bank runs the income classification and the International Comparison Program. Every option containing pair 3 is therefore wrong.
Q8. Which one of the following best explains why India's economy appears larger in purchasing power parity terms than at market exchange rates?
- Many goods and services cost less in India than in high-income countries
- India's exports are larger than its imports
- PPP figures include unpaid household work
- PPP figures are measured at factor cost
Show answer
Answer: A. Many goods and services cost less in India than in high-income countries
PPP converts at the rate that buys the same basket in each country, and since many prices are lower in India, the same rupees buy more. India's trade balance has nothing to do with the conversion, and PPP neither adds unpaid household work nor switches to factor cost.
